Em 1957, o bispo de Garanhuns, Pernambuco, foi assassinado por um padre de sua
diocese. A partir deste fato, o autor analisa a Igreja católica da época, e a difícil convivência
de duas culturas eclesiásticas: a Igreja da romanização, representada pelo bispo, que quer
reorganizar a sua diocese, colocando-a em sintonia com as exigências do Concílio de
Trento; e a Igreja real, representada pelos párocos, em sua maioria oriundos da própria
região – senão da própria paróquia –, que agem de forma independente e que têm
absoluto domínio sobre a sua forma de viver e de trabalhar como párocos. Alguns são
muito mais comprometidos com sua própria família que com as exigências de Roma e
vivem de forma bastante livre a exigência do celibato sacerdotal. A insistência do bispo em
colocar ordem na sua Igreja local vai levá-lo ao confronto com alguns destes párocos, um
dos quais terminará por assassiná-lo.

Portrait of a Northeastern diocese on the eve of a Council
In 1957 the Bishop of Garanhuns, in the state of Pernambuco, was murdered by a priest
of his diocese. Presenting this information as a starting point, the author analyses the
activities of the Catholic Church of that time and the difficult coexistence between two
Ecclesiastic cultures: the ‘romanized’ church, which was represented by the bishop that
sought to reorganize his diocese in order to harmonize its activities with the demands
of the Council of Trent; and the ‘real’ church, represented by mostly local parish priests
that acted independently, having the absolute ruling of their own ways of living and
exercising their duties. Some of them were more committed to their own families than to
the demands of Rome, living ‘freely’, disregarding the exigency of celibacy. The bishop’s
insistence in putting his local church in order will lead him to conflict with some of those
parish priests and this will lead to his assassination by one of them.
