Esse artigo pretende analisar algumas das diversas definições sobre o conceito de indivíduo na teoria sociológica. Vai ser mostrado que elas dependem, sobretudo, da concepção da linguagem. Vão ser mostrados quatro termos – “agente”, “ator”, “sujeito” e “autor”, que condensam quatro modalidades de se considerar o indivíduo e o social. Elas se relacionam a quatro formas identitárias típicas que compõem a identidade social dos indivíduos, além de estarem diretamente relacionadas a quatro “paradigmas” sociológicos franceses. A seleção desses quatro paradigmas me possibilita juntar às concepções de indivíduo e da subjetividade, uma teoria da linguagem, sobretudo as relações entre a linguagem da teoria e a linguagem comum.

This article intends to analyze some of the several definitions of the concept of individual in social theory. It will be shown that they depend mainly on the linguistic conception. Four terms will be shown – “agent”, “actor”, “subject” and “author”, which represent four forms to envision the individual and the social environment. They are related not only to the forms that make up the social identity the individuals may have, but also to four French sociological paradigms. The selection of such paradigms enables me to connect a theory of language to the conceptions of individual and identity, especially in what concerns the relationship between the theory of language and the standard language.
