Resumo

Os garífunas, fruto da miscigenação entre africanos e indígenas caribes durante o período colonial povoam desde o final do século XVIIIas costas caribenhas de 4 países da América Central (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras e Nicarágua). Atualmente, graças a um processo migratório constante iniciado em meados do século XX, boa parte de sua população vive nos Estados Unidos. A transnacionalidade oriunda de suaterritorialização na América Central e sua presença mais recente nos Estados Unidos foi sempre acompanhada de uma rica circulação de símbolos identitários. Esses símbolos articulam diversas representações etnorraciais que vão se transformando sob a influência de processos políticos e sociais de caráter nacional, regional ou global até chegar a uma identificação genérica como povo afrodescendente.

Abstract

The Garífunas: Territorial Transnationality, Identity Building and Political Action

The Garífunas resulted from the miscegenation, during the colonial period, between African and indigenous Caribbeans who live since the end of the 18th century along the Caribbean coasts of four Central American countries (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua). As a consequence of a constant migration process beginning in midst the 20th century, a great part of its population is now living in the United States. The Garífunas´ transnationality, due to its territorialization in Central America and their recent existence in the United States, has always been followed by an enriching circulation of identitary symbols. Those articulate several etnoracial representations that keep being transformed by the influence of national, regional or global political processes and have caused the Garífunas to be generically identified as Afrodescendants.
